Goal maintenance in adults with and without ADHD
Goal maintenance in adults with and without ADHD
The aim of this experiment is to examine whether adults with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) have more difficulty maintaining task goals than adults without ADHD. Problems with goal maintenance can lead to a number of difficulties in everyday life. In this study, we also hope to investigate whether the maintenance of task goals can be improved by varying the way in which information is presented. The study will involve one testing session of approximately 90 minutes.
Who can take part?
We are recruiting adults aged between 17 to 50 who have been diagnosed with ADHD. Participants will need to be willing to be off any stimulant medication for 24 hours prior to the time of testing. All adults in this age range who are affected by this disorder and have no diagnosed co-existing disorder are welcome.
What does the study involve?
If you decide to take part you will be asked to complete a number of computerised and verbal tasks designed to measure your ability to maintain task goals. In some of these tasks, you will be presented with information on a computer screen and will be asked to do things such as name the letters and digits that are presented, read words written in different colours, or identify whether two lines are the same or different lengths. In other tasks, you will be presented with a verbal sequence of letters and digits and asked to recall them in alphabetical and numerical order. Further details on each individual task will be provided by the experimenter.
As a participant in this study you will also be asked to complete a questionnaire, looking at aspects of your behaviour currently and as a child, a 15 minute test of non-verbal reasoning ability and a vocabulary measure.
The data will be transferred to computer files for statistical analysis. No identifying information will be retained and no individuals will be identifiable in any reports emerging from the work. Reports will be based on group data only. At the end of the project, a report on the main findings will be made available to all participants.
All information collected about you during the course of the research will be kept strictly confidential. Personal information will not be released to or viewed by anyone other than researchers involved in this project. All of the data collected will be coded so that it is anonymous and will be stored securely.
How we will proceed if you agree to take part?
Participation is entirely voluntary and you should not feel obligated to give consent simply because the person asking you to participate is known to you. If you would like to take part, we will arrange a convenient time for you to visit the
If you do decide to take part you will be given this information sheet to keep and be asked to sign a consent form. If you decide to take part you are still free to withdraw at any time and without giving a reason. If you choose to withdraw at any time, all records of your participation will be destroyed, unless agreed otherwise. Your participation in this research does not prejudice any right to compensation which you may have under statute or common law.
What is requested at this stage?
If you are interested in taking part, please contact Leah either by phone or email (details below) and she will organise a suitable meeting time with you. You are, of course, at liberty to decline without prejudice. If you have any questions that you would like to raise before reaching a decision, we would be very pleased to discuss them with you.
Thank you for considering this request. We hope that you can help us with our research.
